Our journey into making sea salt began during a foggy June a few years back. While baking up a batch of homemade soft pretzels, we realized we lacked a crucial ingredient – sea salt. With no store on the island, people here learn to make do with what's at hand or to get creative. Using our trusty old wood-fired camp stove, we evaporated the first Matinicus Island sea salt. The enthusiastic reception from the island community hinted at the potential of our endeavor. It sparked the realization that we might be onto something special. Crafting sea salt presented an exciting opportunity to immerse ourselves in the very essence of the island life we cherish. Salt-making blends our passion for nature, commitment to sustainability, need for creativity, and appreciation for the rhythms of the island and Mother Nature.
